about

SORCERESS (formerly known as Funkommunity) is a 5-piece band from New Zealand. Their 2011 debut album Chequered Thoughts received worldwide acclaim and saw the band tour Europe and Japan the following year. Fast forward to 2014, and the band announced a new name: SORCERESS and a new studio album: DOSE.

While previous works were influenced by J Dilla-inspired future soul and R&B, the new album sees their sound evolve, fusing elements of Deep Electronic Soul, Afrobeat, and Dance Music. DOSE retains their distinctive sonic texture, but also projects more movement while going deeper into the source of the music. Experienced in headphones or a club/festival context, Sorceress traverses the boundaries between audio intimacy and the bass driven rhythms of the dancefloor.

The creative duo at the core of Sorceress is producer/band leader Isaac Aesili and vocalist Rachel Fraser. Isaac Aesili's production provides a diverse and sonically rich soundscape from which the charismatic vocals of Rachel Fraser weave through both light and dark lyrical themes. Crafted over the period of a year, the album includes collaboration with Sorceress' guitarist Daniel Ryland. Other musicians involved in the sessions include fellow Kiwis Julien Dyne, Marika Hodgson, Tom Broome, Jonathan Crayford, Steph Brown and Cam Allen.

Track Name: Brother Dragonfly
Always knew that eventually
I’d have to reach back there again
Long time and past forgotten
Still whispering in the wind

I call on my dragonfly

Hover still mid-air, just breathe
Four winds up strong
When the light hits right I know
My unlocking begins

I call on my dragonfly

And in my water garden
He is there
It’s time!
I call on my dragonfly
My mirror brother, my mirror brother dragonfly
I call on my dragonfly

(call) on you brother
Track Name: Freeloadoubt
Without a name and no age

and no way to know how to get around

Don't check your pockets, you got no money

Just hypothetically, what would you do?

Would you take it as a chance to start again?

You could change your name, change your age

You could be ten years younger, if it was believable,

I think you could get away with it

Don’t look in the mirror

Just keep on playing along, playing along, playing along

Hush

You doubt much

Just let me be

For a minute

No I don't wanna think about it

Just let me be

If you let the doubt creep in

Its gonna make itself at home

and you dont want that no

(What's that freeloading on my mind)

And if you let the doubt creep in

you’re as good as sold

What a waste of something beautiful

(Stop that freeloading on my mind)

But you can make it right!

I believe!
Track Name: Teacups
Slow electricity drank from teacups

He’s been out morphing and talking money first foremost and last

I got to tell him

He dont owe me nothing

but same goes in reverse

You can never really know when they don't know know know better

Smooth clarity drank from teacups

Set your propellers up Jacobs ladder just to try find our way again

Ongoing distraction

Keeps on running in circles from his past

I got to tell him

He dont owe me nothing

You can never really know when they don't know no better
Track Name: Te Kano
They don’t know

What goes on

They don't ask right

left the magic out the question

Take it all with a grain of salt

Foot stuck in the fault

tripped the line and got a lesson

Oh but you can figure it out out along the way’
Track Name: Treat The Feel
I push and shove

You hold me down with tough love

and then I nearly give up to you

Then I regain all of my senses

You got the secret weapon baby

Gotta promise not to fuck me up

I’m on to you

Its not enough for me to go on

Gotta keep it real

Gotta treat this feel with love

With love

You got the secret weapon baby

Gotta promise not to fuck me up

I should have lied oh but I'm so damn stubborn

but I can make my mind up real soon

Oh boy now we’re taking this real deep

and I can tell i'm not gonna get no sleep

and thats just fine, thats ok with me

(oh you got me again)

Treat the feel

It’s not enough for me to go on

Gotta keep it real

Gotta treat this feel with love

With love

You got the secret weapon baby

Gotta promise not to fuck me up
Track Name: Cherished
The mountain and the sea

A house and a reservoir of dreams

where you speak

And I know that she runs

They’re tired in the drought

and it’s dry crevice of the mouth

but it has tricked them all

You see it keeps her going

The mountain and the sea

A house and a reservoir of dreams

where you speak
Track Name: Dose
He sounds obsidian

in his voice

So glass-like

So last night

Obsidian

Oh I slip right off

of his voice

So glass-like

So last night

Now nobody can come close

if that sound don’t got that dose

He sounds obsidian

in his voice

So glass-like

So last night

Obsidian

Oh I slip right off

of his voice

So glass-glike

So last night
Track Name: Desire
They all want something

Do whatever it takes

In shameless ways

It is what it is

(All they want)

Is to put their name on it

(All they need)

Is to feel they own it

(So they can)

Do what they want with it

and lock it up

(You know you can’t see past your own desire)

No they can't see past their own desire

No they can't see beyond their own desire

They all want something

Do whatever it takes

In shameless ways

It is what it is
Track Name: Shifting
I feel a shifting

in the sight of things

Honest daylight on my skin

is the surest thing, the surest thing to me

It seems the surest thing in the world

in all this unpredictability

Shifting

You go about your day

the way only you can

and I see so many things

could be problem tomorrow

but what do you care

I get the impression the world in their heads isn’t to share

I got to redirect my eyes

Don’t wanna lose daylight

Shifting
